This is an exceptional find! This beautiful quilt is made from a patchwork of 19th century French fabrics, dating to approximately the 1880s to the 1890s. There are cottons, linens and cretonne, the lovely nubby textured fabric.
There is a variety of exquisite fabrics in this quilt. The over all look is one of warmth and the subtle tones of the quilt blend perfectly together. The patterns are wonderful; roses and foliage, birds on bowers, fuchsias and scrolls. There are some wonderful fabrics here. The reverse is made from one complete piece of cotton fabric which has a light background and is covered in a very attractive floral pattern which resembles poppies and acanthus leaves; wonderful! The quilt is bound around the edges by a red binding.
The quilt measures approximately 71" by 82". The condition is amazing; there is some light fading to parts of the cotton backing and a 2cm darn on the backing. The condition of the fabrics is stunning - no fading or wear - perhaps the quilt was made during the mid 20th century using the very best of the 19th century fabrics. Thereafter, the quilt appears to have had little use.
A very special quilt which will make a spectacular centrepiece for your sofa or bed.
