This is an exquisite example of a Victorian prie dieu or 'prayer chair'. The chair dates to the mid to late Victorian period and, amazingly, retains its orginal petit-point embroidery - making this an extremely rare find indeed!
The two front legs are attractively turned and shaped, and have their original castors. The backrest and seat of the chair are covered with a stunning hand-sewn embroidery of roses; quite superb. The edge of the seat and rear of the backrest are covered with velvet.
The chair measures approximately 87cm high from floor to top of back. The seat is 42cm by 40cm. The edge of the seat is 34cm from the floor. The prie dieu is in marvellous condition for its age; the original embroidery shows some signs of wear, mainly near the edge of the seat and on the top (where it was obviously used as intended!) There are some scuffs etc. to the wooden frame and legs, but nothing that detracts. Underneath the chair, the outer hessian has been replaced at some time. Inside, the springs, sacking interior and filling (most likely horse hair) are all original. The velvet around the edge of the seat is original, and although the black velvet on the rear looks very new, I think it may well be the original which has been repositioned.
This is a very, very rare find indeed. Prie dieux are often found in an extremely dilapidated condition and usually require total restoration and re-upholstery. This beatiful example, whilst bearing a few moderate signs of its age, is a wonderful investment and a truly beautiful Victorian piece of furniture.
