Sometimes - just sometimes, it can all be a little confusing, remembering whether the 'Arts & Crafts' movement comes before the Edwardian period or if 'Art Nouveau' pre-dates 'Art Deco' or vice-versa?
Of course, other terms like 'Victorian' and 'Regency' may also mean more to us here in the UK than to our overseas visitors. So we thought we'd put together a simple diagram to provide a convenient reference to many of the dating terms that we use throughout the store...
The dates which accompany the eras shown (left) are not necessarily definitive - many historians still argue about when an era became popular as opposed to when it was first evident. Others, like the 'war times' and those relating to the reign of English monarchs (such as Queen Victoria) are rather more specific.
The size, colour and height of the columns shown in the diagram are not relative - we've simply arranged names and dates so that they don't overlap too much and become illegible!
Anyway, we hope this overview of the periods in recent British history helps in some way and if we think of any others - we'll try to squeeze them in somehow!
