Antique Welsh Chrysanthemum Quilt (astb158)

What an absolutely beautiful and breathtaking quilt this is! This Welsh quilt dates to the late Victorian period and is exceptional in both its quality and beauty.

It came from a house in Lampeter, Dyfed and was one of three quilts presented to three sisters. The main, decorative side of the quilt is made from one of the rarest and most stunning fabrics I have ever seen; white and pink 'mop-head' chrysanthemums set against a beautiful carpet of soft pink leaves which vary from areas of dark rich contrast to those that are light and soft. The chrysanthemum flowers are extra-special, with their bowed heads and tiny buds, together with their pretty green foliage. The pink and white tones have an amazing effect and the over-all look really is a showstopper!

Of course, this isn't just a beautiful quilt - the handstitched, detailed work is another cause for celebration! The stitching is better seen on the plain, raspberry reverse. The detail is out of this world! There are circles, diamond-hatching, hearts and, taking pride of place in the centre is an elaborate fern, with its unfolding leaves. The fern was a popular decorators theme in Victorian days and was often seen on textiles and in print.

The quilt measures approximately 76" by 86". This quilt has seen little use. It retains its sheeny 'newness' and feels delightfully clean too! There are a couple of small marks near the bottom on the patterned side and I think someone may have attempted to clean one of them, as there is wear to one small spot - this is over the white of a chrysanthemum so is very hard to spot.

This antique quilt is a rare piece of history and a super find for the collector of quilts or perfect as an heirloom to pass down through the generations.
