Victorian Souvenir Sewing Book Box (hw1258)

A beautiful example of antique souvenir ware from the late Victorian era. This box, in the form of a book, has a leather-type bound cover with the lovely image of a dog holding a basket of forget-me-nots on the front. Impressed into the covering are the words: 'A Present from Buxton' (a spa town in Derbyshire, England.) The edges of the box have a printed design of a griffin. Inside, the box is lined with a decorative gold over charcoal printed paper with a floral design. There is a small mirror on the inside cover and a strap which still holds some of the original pins and needles (although they are now rusted.)

This delightful and very rare piece of quality souvenir ware would make a wonderful addition to a collection. Alternatively, it would be a very useful item for the dressing table or craft room. The box is approximately 7" by 5" and is 1.5" deep. In very good condition with age-related wear (bumps to corners) and a 1" watermark to the rear at top.
