Rare and Original Catherine Klein Roses (pg532)

Vintage Home are proud to announce the discovery of an authentic and early painting by Catherine (Catherina) Klein - one of the finest still life painters that ever lived.

Signed by the artist and age-verified by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford - this captivatingly beautiful study of rich pink roses and soft green foliage gives a tantalising glimpse into the genius that made Klein a world revered artist of floral subjects, whose masterpieces adorned a million chocolate boxes, postcards, calendars, books and more for over forty years.

Rarer still, the painting contains an exquisitely fine seascape cameo from another artist - a practice that was popular in creating multi-faceted artworks typically found on confectionery and jewellery boxes of the era.

There are currently only a handful of Klein originals known to exist due to the devastating loss of most of her works following the bombing of the London and Berlin printing houses during the war.

From the brush of Klein herself, this stunning work is an incalculably rare find and will be of interest to collectors of keystone floral art and Klein lovers around the globe...

This is a stunning study of a pink rose in watercolour and goauche, the medium which Catherine made her own. This is simply beautiful and bears Catherine's personal painted signature (seen in the last photo in the top righthand corner of the seascape.) The integral seascape bears the signature J W Stowel. Lakeside and seascapes were often depicted in cameo alongside larger, floral works. The work is set into a mount and its original frame with an art nouveau design - all original to the late Victorian period.

Klein's original paintings were held in the Berlin Museum and at Raphael Tuck's printworks in London (where the desirable postcards and chromolithographs were produced), but both of these were bombed during WW2 and nearly all of Catherine's paintings were lost forever.

A rare opportunity to own an original masterpiece by one of the most talented flower artists that ever lived and who, even today, is reproduced and referenced across the art world.

The frame has age-related wear. There is darkening and marking to the mount as seen. Some spotting to the underside of the glass - this is not on the painting. Please examine the photos carefully. The frame is approximately 45cm by 31.5cm. The visible area of the painting is 27.5cm by 15cm.
