Rare 1920s French Toile Linen (tx303)

This is one of the most exceptional fabrics I have seen to date. The fabric dates to the 1920s and is French in origin. Toile is a very popular French pattern - but I have never seen one as amazing as this, with the full colour pastoral scenes set against a striking black background. This fabric is in fact three lengths of fabric sewn together with a hem either end. The pretty pastoral scenes are so delightful and depict young peasant-folk dancing, drinking and sitting by the river. The detail in the scenes is breathtaking and the flora and fauna which appear around the pastoral scenes are equally lovely; there is a dog and a swooping bird, and the flowers are exquisite; irises, poppies, daisies, roses - and more! The tactile texture seems to add to the depth of colour and pattern and the result is a truly stunning fabric.

There are three lengths of fabric sewn together giving a very generous size of 75" wide by 86" long. The top of the fabric has a stitched channel so I presume this was a curtain which hung from a rod. One of the edge lengths has a horizontal join half way down. The condition is exceptional, no fading or wear, some dustiness from age/storage.
