Victorian Griffin and Dragonfly Embroidery (tx892)

An incredibly detailed, handstitched embroidery and petit point dating to the late Victorian era. This magnificent piece was originally intended for use as a chair seat, judging by the shape of it. It depicts a beautiful image of flowers and foliage over a chocolate background, the flowers frame a central design of a griffin and dragonfly - these are worked in extremely fine petit point and the detail is superb. The colours are warm and subtle, yet at the same time, quite striking. It really is quite amazing that this antique embroidery is entirely handworked. It could be made into a cushion cover or as a seat pad for a chair.

The embroidery measures approximately 19" by 16". In excellent condition, colours may have muted over the years and there is perhaps some darkening to the lighter area around the griffin,but this is to be expected, it is still a fantastic piece and would no doubt brighten with a gentle clean - personally, we think the muted colours suit the design perfectly.
